How to Best Prepare for Dental Implants
Dental implants serve as an excellent option for those missing one or more. If you’re considering dental implants, there are necessary steps to take in your preparation that will improve your implant experience. Any type of operation can be scary to some. However, many patients don’t know that dental implants have an extremely high rate of patient satisfaction, and that most of our patients at Advanced Dental Care report not feeling a thing. Today, Dr. Robert Amirian and Dr. Viren Abreo are going to break down the necessary steps to take to get the most out of your dental implant experience.
Stay On Your Oral Health Regimen
Keeping a clean and healthy smile is vital before going into an implant operation. Dental implant surgeries require an incision in the gums, where the surgeon will place the titanium implant after drilling a hole in the jawbone. A clean mouth is the best way to fight potential infections and ensure a successful surgery. Again, while this is an invasive process, most patients report feeling very low levels of discomfort during their implant operations. A pain-free dental experience is at the heart of our practice!
Tell Your Dentist About Your Medications
Be sure to tell your implant dentist about any medications you’re on. You’ll be advised to make any necessary changes before the operation. Medications containing Aspirin or vitamin E should not be taken in the week leading up to your operation, as well as any medications that inhibit blood coagulation.
Stop Any Alcohol and Tobacco Use
Both cigarettes and chewing tobacco can adversely affect the healing process post-operation. These products decrease the level of oxygen in the blood, and should be completely avoided for at least two or even three weeks prior to operation, and not resumed until fully healed. Your implant dentist will guide you on the best timeline to use.
Alcohol should be avoided in the days leading up to the operation. Additionally, alcohol should be avoided the day of the surgery and throughout the healing process. Similar to tobacco, alcohol consumption can affect the healing process post-operation.
Arrange A Ride Home
Anesthesia or sedatives are used during dental implant operations, and the affects can last several hours after surgery. So, be sure to arrange a ride home after your operation to stay safe.
